DENVER – A seven-year veteran of the Denver Police force was in serious condition Monday after being involved in a chain-reaction crash during a traffic stop.

The accident happened shortly after 1:00 a.m. at 400 West Colfax when, according to Denver Police, a pickup truck crashed into one of the police cruisers involved in the traffic stop.

“The impact of the crash pushed the police vehicle into Officer (Angela) Simon pining her between the stopped vehicle and the police vehicle,” said DPD spokesman Sonny Jackson. “Officer Simon landed in front of the stopped vehicle.”

Simon was transported to Denver Health Medical Center.

The driver of the pickup truck, identified as Nicholas Herrera, 21, was arrested at the scene. He faces charges of DUI, Careless Driving, Vehicular Assault, and Failure to Yield the Right Away of Emergency Vehicle.
