DENVER — Civil rights attorney David Lane is one of many lawyers coming together to form the Lawyers Civil Rights Coalition.

The association will act as a response team to any citizen who feels their civil rights have been violated.

“Any incursions hindering our ability to speak freely will be met with a federal lawsuit,” Lane said.

The coalition will focus on violations of freedom of speech, constitutional issues surrounding immigration status, police misconduct issues and anything that violates the Bill of Rights.

“We want to be in a position to share information, to be a rapid response team anytime we see a constitutional violation we will have zero tolerance for it,” Lane said.

Lane has met with 40 Colorado attorneys, all preparing to dedicate countless hours to the fight. The group was formed after Election Day.

“We are the response team trying to do our best to fight any incursions into the Bill of Rights that Donald Trump, or anyone else for that matter wishes to make,” Lane said.

Lane said he sees police misconduct being a top priority, citing the number of nationwide Black Lives Matter protests.

“If police departments in Colorado become embolden and they start doing stop and frisk, I might only get one case in my office. The ACLU might get three in their office, some other civil rights firm may get five in their office. We can see a pattern start to develop,” Lane said.

Lane believes the true goal is to combine forces with attorneys across the state, representing all citizens who feel as though they don’t have a voice.

“There is strength in unity and the LCRC is a unified group of civil rights lawyers,” Lane said.
