LOVELAND – An anonymous tip has lead investigators to conclude that the carcass of what was thought to be a decapitated puppy found in late April was actually a raccoon.

The animal was found placed in a life vest along the banks of the Big Thompson River with its paws tied together with duct-tape.

Necropsy results originally indicated the animal was a four-month-old puppy. However, a local resident has come forward to say the animal was actually a raccoon found dead on the side of the road after being hit by a car, the Larimer Humane Society said.

No citation has been issued.

This incident happened just five days after the carcass of an adult female dog was found five miles north of the same shore. That case remains under investigation by the Larimer Humane Society and the Loveland Police Department.
