BAYFIELD, Colo. — The body of a dead sheriff’s deputy was found in a burned home in southwest Colorado, the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation firefighters responded to a home at 6497 County Road 516 in Bayfield around 12:30 a.m. Friday.

They found a 42-year-old man unresponsive inside the home. He was later pronounced dead.

The La Plata County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Jeremiah Lee, a deputy with the sheriff’s office. The cause of death has not been determined and the case is under investigation.

Officials have not elaborated on the cause of the fire or the extent of damage to the home.

Lee had worked as a deputy for less than two years after previously working for more than a decade for the Durango Police Department.
