LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- A couple dropped off a newborn baby at a West Metro Fire station in Lakewood on Tuesday morning after they claimed a woman gave the child to them and said she told them she didn't want it anymore.

West Metro Chief Gary Armstrong said in a statement the newborn girl was dropped off about 8:15 a.m. by a middle-aged couple, who said a woman handed them the baby at a retail store near West 14th Avenue  and Wadsworth Boulevard.

West Metro Fire and paramedics took the baby to an area hospital for medical care, Armstrong said. The child is in good condition and has been well cared for.

In April 2000, the Colorado General Assembly passed the Colorado Safe Haven Newborns law that allows a parent to hand over an infant up to 72 hours old to a fire station or hospital with no questions asked ... no fear of prosecution.

Linda Prudhomme, Executive Director of Colorado Safe Haven for Newborns said, “We want to get the word out about the Safe Haven law so that the next time a mother has a baby she can’t keep, she knows she can go directly to any fire station or hospital. Happily, this baby is OK.

According to Prudhomme, since the law was passed, 40 babies have been safely handed over to fire stations in Colorado, with 2,000 babies saved nationwide.
