DENVER — A rapist who tried to hire fellow jail inmates to kill his victim was sentenced Monday to 48 years in prison, consecutive to his current rape sentence.

Police said Tony Dotson, 42, broke into the victim’s home in west Denver in May of 2012 to sexually and physically assault her.

Dotson was in jail awaiting trial when he approached numerous inmates about killing the victim, police said. He offered money, a Mercedes-Benz and a $14,000 ring to get gang members in his cell block to help him kill the victim before the case reached trial.

Arrangements for the murder were made, according to court documents, but the hit was never carried out.

Dotson is already serving a 96-year indeterminate to life sentence for the initial attack.
