CASTLE ROCK, Colo. -- Red, white and a lot of blue -- the color of the day at the opening of the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo on Saturday. Fairgoers of all ages backed the blue by wearing the color.

Communities across the nation have come together to support their law enforcement agencies, and that was the case at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Saturday.

"We are a community and we want to be a part of your community," Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said. "And we want the community to be part of us."

Spurlock helped kick off the annual fair and rodeo by presenting a saddle to the rodeo queen. Colorado State Patrol troopers invited visitors to wear blue to show their support.

"We are pretty fortunate here in Colorado that most people are very supportive of us," Colorado State Patrol trooper Richard Krantz said. "But today is a little more (supportive), which is really good. A lot of handshakes, a lot of pats on the back and a lot of thank you's."

Cowboys and cowgirls competing in the rodeo also showed their support by donating and wearing pins with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Fallen Officers Fund.

"I feel it's always important (to show support)," said Cory Addeberry, whose husband competed in the tie-down roping event. "They are an important part of our world."

Spurlock said there is no doubt it is an important time to feel the support, but also praised the community he feels fortunate to protect.

"We're blessed here in Douglas County," he said. "It's great to see the folks visiting the county fair, buying the blue ribbons and wearing them. We are patting them on the back thanking them."

The Douglas County Fair and Rodeo continues through Aug. 7. Admission will again be free on Sunday with a concert starting at 3 p.m.
