WELD COUNTY, Colo. -- A Colorado State Patrol corporal died after he was struck by a vehicle during the blizzard on the eastern Plains Wednesday morning.

CSP said the incident happened about 11:20 a.m. on Interstate 76 at mile marker 47 near Roggen, about 10 miles east of Keenesburg and about 50 miles northeast of Denver.

About 4 p.m. Wednesday, CSP identified the corporal as 52-year-old Daniel Groves. He was taken to Platte Valley Medical Center after being struck and died a short time later.

CSP said Groves was assisting a vehicle that slid off the roadway when he was struck by a 2001 Volvo driven by a Centennial man. The Volvo driver was also taken to PVMC with moderate injuries.

Cpl. Groves had been with the State Patrol for about 12 years.

He leaves behind a partner of two years.

State Patrol Chief Matthew Packard is expected to talk about Groves Thursday. There's also a procession planned for him.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. CSP said high speed in poor driving conditions is being investigated as a possible factor.

Charges have not yet been filed in the case.
