LONGMONT, Colo. -- Can you imagine going from Denver to New York in about 20 minutes?
For one Colorado company, that's not a far reach. Longmont-based ET3 Global Alliance Inc. is at the forefront of what it calls, "space travel on earth."
The idea is, a system of vacuum tubes that shoot passenger cars, at extremely high speeds, all over the world. ET3 CEO Daryl Oster says the tubes could be built for a tenth the cost of high speed rail, and a quarter the cost of a freeway, and could go from New York to China in just two hours.
Oster says, “A two tube system, at 350mph, can carry as much traffic as a 40 lane freeway.” Not to mention, trips around the world would take just six hours. “There`s no air in the tube to slow it down, and the vehicle is magnetically levitated so we eliminate virtually all of the aerodynamic resistance and rolling resistance associated with transportation.”
Theoretically you could travel from Colorado Springs to Denver in just minutes at 350 mph, while international jaunts would hit 4,000 mph. The kicker -- it would be a fraction of the cost of conventional travel. "We can provide 50 times more transportation per kilowatt hour of electrical energy, compared to the most efficient electric car or electric train."
Elon Musk, the man behind Tesla and SpaceX, is also a supporter of the technology, but finding other investors can be a challenge. One of the biggest competitors would be high speed rail, like California's $70 billion project backed by the government.
Oster argues, because tube transport is a fraction of the cost to operate, "we can be a tax producer and income producer for government, instead of a tax absorber."

In case you're wondering how anyone can travel at 4,000 mph, as long as the cars don't speed up or stop too quickly, the force would be about the same as sitting in your parked car.
