Colo. Springs soldier killed in Afghanistan

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A soldier from Colorado Springs was killed Tuesday after an attack by enemy forces in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense released the names of three soldiers killed in the attack, including 24-year-old Spc. Rob L. Nichols from Colorado Springs.

Spc. Nichols was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division out of Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Sgt. Stefan M. Smith and 1st Lt. Jonam Russell were among the soldiers killed supporting Operation Enduring Freedom when their unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device.

Spc. Nichols was on his first deployment.
