Social Media Campaign Against ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’

DENVER --  "Fifty Shades of Grey" is premiering at movie theaters across Colorado, but some women's groups say the highly anticipated film portrays abuse and not love.

A social media campaign called #50dollarsNot50shades is trending online. The National Center on Sexual Exploitation is one of the sponsors of the 50 dollars not 50 shades campaign.

Some Colorado groups are not boycotting the film, rather they're encouraging women to talk to their families.

"This is a really positive campaign," said Amy Pohl, communications director for the Colorado Coalition Against Domestic Violence. "It's saying for whatever reason you chose not to see the film. How about we support some of the local domestic violence programs with the money you would have to spend on going to the movies, getting a babysitter and going to dinner."

The book sold 100 million copies worldwide and the movie is projected to make $60 million through the Presidents Day holiday weekend.

Lone Tree resident Chelsea Dickerson saw the movie with a group of friends when it premiered Thursday night.

"I just thought it was very steamy and romantic," said Dickerson. "He (Christian Grey) hit her (Anastasia Steele) hard. She backed away from it all. She said no more, stop, I'm done with this."

The movie displays BDSM which is a variety of sex practices involving dominance, submission, role playing and restraint.

"It's really questionable whether or not Anastasia, the protagonist, actually gives consent. I think when there isn't consent that's where we spill over into domestic violence and violence against women," said Pohl.
