ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- A standing-room only crowd attended a funeral service Monday morning for a Centennial doctor who was killed in a shooting last week.

Dr. Kenneth Atkinson was shot and killed while trying to help a neighbor who had been wounded by gunfire, allegedly from her husband.

A huge crowd packed into Cherry Creek Presbyterian Church for the service.

Friends and neighbors said Atkinson was like a country doctor. He would stop by the house and help you if you were sick. Or sometimes if a patient couldn't afford to pay, he would forego the fee.

Atkinson was shot twice while helping one last time when the shooting began on April 4. The suspect, Kevin Lyons, was in court Friday facing 14 charges for allegedly killing Atkinson and wounding two women, including his wife. Both women are expected to make a full recovery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Kendal and Taylor Atkinson Foundation. It is named after Atkinson's two children who died of a rare disease.
