EDGEWATER, Colo. -- A 2-alarm fire has left four families without a home Tuesday morning, and a simple candle may have started it.
The fire destroyed three units in Edgewater at the Terra Village Apartments near West 26th Avenue and Kendall Street.
Everyone got out okay, and investigators are still looking into the fire’s official cause Tuesday. But they tell us a woman, who has asked not to be identified, says it started when she lit a candle that then lit up a lamp shade.
She told authorities she tried to put it out, but things got out of control quickly. Her neighbor, Eddie Gallegos, heard her screams and rushed to help.
“We heard the lady screaming she kept saying ‘Help please! Help please!’” Gallegos said. “We thought somebody was hurt or something. We ran down the stairs and the lady had smoke coming out of their house.”
Eddie then ran into the burning apartment and rescued the woman’s dog, then banged on doors making sure everyone got out okay.
The American Red Cross is taking care of the families Tuesday morning, providing them with a place to stay. Firefighters urge everyone to be careful with candles, electric cords and electronics, which all can be fire hazards.
