HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. -- Children playing with a lighter are suspected of starting a brush fire in Highlands Ranch on Sunday afternoon.

The fire started about 2:30 p.m. and spread to three acres in 30 minutes, South Metro Fire Rescue said. The fire threatened six homes and at one point got so close, it burned the fences along property lines.

McArthur Ranch Road was closed at Heatherton Street because of the fire. The fire was under control just after 3 p.m.

"All the neighbors got out their hoses and we were all spraying the fence line all the way around here before the fire department showed up," Kris Bussell said.

Debbie Delong watched from the roadblock as the flames reached her fence line. Her daughter and dogs were at home when the fire started and they evacuated to a neighbor's home.

"It was awful. I was shaking and just trying to get to the house was really hard. This is the best-case scenario, I guess. It just took the fence and the yard so we are really thankful to get our family and our house," Delong said.
