GOLDEN, Colo. — Bond was set at $50,000 on Wednesday for Steve Weigum, the Ute Meadows Elementary School principal who was arrested for investigation of sex assault on a child more than a decade ago.
Jefferson County Judge Mark Randall also ordered Weigum to have no contact with anyone younger than 18 years old or with the alleged victim.
Weigum appeared at the court hearing by videoconference and was wearing orange jail clothes. The 55-year-old faces charges of aggravated incest and sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust.
He was placed on administrative leave by Jefferson County Public Schools after his arrest Tuesday.
During the hearing, prosecutors said Weigum’s victim was a young girl and that the allegations are “concerning.”
Randall noted it was not a one-time incident based on the arrest affidavit. The alleged assaults ended when the girl was in the fourth or fifth grade.
“It’s concerning about the case. It’s concerning about how long this took place,” Randall said.
Weigum also cannot have contact with the alleged victim.
“The alleged assaults occurred over 10 years ago,” the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Tuesday. “Although the investigation is in the preliminary stages, there is no indication that any child who previously or currently attends Ute Meadows Elementary are victims.”
