JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — A body was found in a burned-out vehicle in Jefferson County on Sunday morning, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said.

“We have members of our homicide unit here investigating this as a suspicious death,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Jacki Kelley said. “We don’t believe that this is a car accident.”

The sheriff’s office received numerous reports of a car on fire at 9500 Cougar Road near the Deer Creek area about 11:40 a.m.

“I came up the hill and I saw a big cloud of smoke and some flames,” a neighbor said. “The car was totally engulfed in flames.”

It took a significant amount of time to put out the fire, and that’s when officials realized there was a body inside.

“There are all kinds of things that make this a more difficult scene because we had a fire. Some of the things we would like to hope to find inside the vehicle to begin to tell the story of what happened here were burned,” Kelley said.

Residents were in shock.

“It’s very quiet generally on the weekends,” a neighbor said.

The sheriff’s office said it will be a difficult investigation and it has more questions than answers.

“We need to find out who this person is. We need to find out how they died. So those are two critical steps that we’re already looking at those things,” Kelly said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7807.
