DENVER — Old cars go to junkyards, but where do you think old airplanes go?

The largest airplane salvage yard in Colorado will be closing soon. It’s home to thousands of aircraft that can no longer fly.

Dave Elliot owns Acme Aircraft Sales and Salvage, but he has to sell it.  “The property has been sold and we had a two-year window to get things off the property and we’re closing in on that on the end,” Elliot said. It’s at 8131 East 40th Avenue near where the old Stapleton airport used to be.

While Dave Elliot’s feet are on the ground, being a pilot himself, he’s always looking skyward. The man loves aviation.

He points out his personal aircraft. “It’s a 1943 Nordine Norseman, World War II transport.”

Most of the planes and parts will go to restaurants, furniture makers, museums, and of course, aviation buffs. No matter what everything must go.

Since the late 1950s, Acme Aviation has been buying and selling planes and their parts. It will close down in May.

If you’re looking for any deals, treat Dave nicely. “If I’m in a good mood there’s good deals to be had.”
