ARVADA, Colo. — Police are looking for a man who is accused of stabbing a 78-year-old woman at her home.

Police said the suspect knocked on the woman’s door near just before 5 a.m. recently.  She answered the door thinking it was the newspaper delivery person. When she opened, police said the man stabbed her in the chest.

She ran to a neighbor’s house where they called 911. The woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. She was stable as of Monday afternoon. The woman’s family, who did not want to be identified, said the woman is doing better and is expected to be OK.

Neighbors are still in shock after the incident. They said it is a very safe street where everyone knows each other.

“If we’re in the backyard when that kind of thing happens, who says that same guy won’t come and start stabbing a bunch of other people?” 13-year-old Isaac Rowe said.

Rowe and his siblings were sleeping in tents in their backyard for a summer camp-out when the incident occurred. They woke up to the sound of police cars and ambulance sirens.

“I heard the sirens so I got really scared and I curled up in the corner of the tent,” Rowe’s younger sister Sandra said.

Police are not sure if the attack was random or targeted.

“We don’t have motive at this time. We’re not sure why he  did this or what this is about so our concern right now is to identify him and apprehend him as soon as possible,” Arvada police spokeswoman Jill McGranahan said.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 30s. He is about 5-foot-10 with a thin build. He has brown buzz-cut hair with facial stubble. He was last seen wearing a dark long-sleeve shirt and dark pants.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 720-898-6900. Investigators are seeking surveillance video or clues from witnesses who might have seen something.
