COMMERCE CITY, Colo. -- Leo and Lucy Bueno were enjoying a night of watching movies and handing out candy to trick-or-treaters on Halloween when someone shot their 24-year-old son in their driveway.
Dillon Bueno had walked outside to show a friend his new car in the 7300 block of Krameria Street about 9:30 p.m. Saturday. That's when three men in Halloween costumes allegedly walked up and tried to rob him.
Bueno's family said their son told the men he didn't have anything. That's when they shot him in the chest and then in the face.
"You could tell it was gunfire, but I just didn't want to believe it," said Bueno's father, Leo. "He's laying right there and he's taking his breaths real nice and slow and I said keep doing it, keep doing it, keep taking breaths please. Hang in there with me son. Please don't go."
Two days have passed and the suspects remain on the loose. No one knows if Bueno knew the attackers. That's something the Adams County Sheriff's Office said it's trying to figure out.
The suspects are only described as being African Americans in their late teens or early 20s. All three are reportedly under 6-foot. Police said the suspects were wearing skull bandanas that covered the lower half of their faces.
The family said not knowing who killed their son is unbearable.
"My heart is shattered. They took away a piece of my heart. He can never be replaced," said Lucy Bueno, Dillon's mother.
However, even worse is not knowing why he was shot.
"I don't understand the motive for it. They didn't take anything. They left everything on him," Leo Bueno said.
Family and friends are pleading for help, hoping someone will have the answers they desperately need.
"We're just asking please turn yourselves in because Dillon was a good kid. He was a good guy. We all loved him," Lucy Bueno said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Lee Page at 720-322-1234 or Adams County Sheriff's Records at 720-322-1313.
The family has also created a memorial fund. To contribute, visit any local Wells Fargo bank and ask for the Dillon Leo Bueno Memorial Fund, account No. 2418326381.
