DENVER — Two teenagers were injured after being struck by a vehicle on Wednesday afternoon, the Denver Police Department said.

The teens were taken to Denver Health Medical Center, where one is fighting for his life, while the other is expected to be OK.

The 13- and 14-year-old were in the bicycle lane when they were struck by an elderly female driver near East Yale Avenue and East Nielsen Way in southeast Denver just after 1:30 p.m., police said.

The 14-year-old was riding a bicycle and was hit directly by the vehicle, then thrown off the bike. He underwent surgery Wednesday night. The 13-year-old was riding a skateboard and is expected to be OK.

The vehicle that hit the teens ended on the grass in Robert H. McWilliams Park at Yale and South Milwaukee Street, six blocks from the crash.

Police said the female driver in her 80s was seen driving erratically before hitting the teens. The woman was taken to a hospital with minor injures. Police are investigating whether she had a medical emergency while driving the vehicle.

“When I say erratic, I’m not saying driving on the sidewalk and driving over people’s lawns. I’m saying that person was not able to maintain lane assignment at that particular time,” Denver police Sgt. David Bingham said.

The scene was filled with witnesses who were very emotional, with only a bike, shoes and skateboard remaining at the scene of the crash.

“It just looked like a child laying there,” witness Diana Yurcisin said. “I just hope he made it.”
