DENVER -- One minute they were out having fun in Denver. The next, two teenagers were lying in the street, victims of a hit-and-run driver.

An ambulance took them to the hospital.

It happened about 2 a.m. Friday on South Colorado Boulevard and East Iliff Avenue.

That suspect truck was driving eastbound on Iliff when it turned north on Colorado and hit a group of young people in the crosswalk headed east toward Marrakech Hookah Lounge.

“It’s just a mellow relaxing night,” says Hookah patron, Robert Cleveland.

At hotspot Marrakech Hookah Lounge visitors share flavored tobacco.

But Denver Police believe some hookah patrons also shared a frightening experience.

“I got two in the street,” says dispatcher on website Radio Reference.

Police say a group of young people crossing Colorado eastbound at Iliff got hit by a truck, which didn’t stick around--although part of its front-end did.

Surveillance video shows an ambulance race to the scene.

A freelance photographer got there soon after.

“It was a pretty good sized crowd—about 15-20 people gathered around the accident. The two men, lying in the street,” says witness and freelance photographer Shane Anthony.

He shot the immediate aftermath, showing paramedics tending to the victims: both teenagers.

One was taken away on a stretcher.

Then, the other was loaded into an ambulance.

Denver Police say the group was walking in the crosswalk, evidence markers show their path.

But police are more interested in the path the hit-and-run driver took, as he left behind victims seriously injured in the street.

“They were in the wrong and they did something wrong, So, hopefully they can find the people who did it,” says Cleveland.

Police say the suspect vehicle is a dark, older-model pickup truck, perhaps a Chevy or Ford, made before 2000, with front-end damage.

One teenager was treated at the hospital and released, while the other is still there.

He is expected to be fine.

If you know anything about the accident, Denver Police would like to hear from you.
