FRUITA, Colo. — A 16-year-old hiker died Tuesday after falling about 100 feet at Colorado National Monument.

The boy was looking down over the edge of a cliff at the Independence Monument, which is the signature rock formation of Colorado National Monument.

Authorities said he had gone past the guardrail. A Mesa County Search and Rescue team said the boy was in and out of consciousness and talking when rescuers arrived, but they say he was in extreme pain and died at the scene.
