AURORA, Colo. -- An 11-year-old boy riding his bicycle was seriously injured after being hit by a truck in front of West Middle School on Monday morning, the Aurora Police Department said.

The accident happened about 8 a.m. at East 13th Avenue and Florence Street.

Aurora police said the driver of the blue truck was making a right turn onto 13th from Florence after stopping at the stop sign to drop off his child for school. As the male driver was making the turn, the 11-year-old began to cross 13th from the west side sidewalk on his bike and was hit by the truck.

The unidentified boy, a sixth-grader at the school, suffered head injuries but was alert and conscious. He was transported to Children's Hospital to be treated. His condition was described as serious but not life-threatening.

The crash was captured on surveillance video, police said. The truck driver appeared to fully obey a stop sign immediately before the accident, officers said, and the unidentified 11-year-old did not stop before crossing 13th Avenue.

Police said the driver of the truck stayed on the scene and was being questioned. Officers reported seeing a significant amount of frost on the vehicle's windshield, which might have obstructed visibility.
