THORNTON, Colo. — The search for a 10-year-old Thornton girl ended with tears and sorrow Thursday evening after a child’s body was found in the search area for Kiaya Campbell.

The body was found in an open area with a creek bed about two miles from where Kiaya was last seen in the 12900 block of Colorado Boulevard and one mile from her Thornton home in the 12400 block of Forest Drive.

The Thornton Police Department called off the search and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation canceled an Amber Alert for her that was issued about 1:30 p.m.

Hundreds of volunteers searched for Kiaya. She was last seen alive Wednesday night.

Detectives are still waiting on a confirmed identity from the Adams County Coroner’s Office, but they said they believe the body is that of Kiaya.

“We were hoping to go find her,” a volunteer said. “Didn’t quite turn out that way.”

Officers and volunteers had been canvassing open spaces near the girl’s home. They also searched nearby lakes and ponds.

Police said the girl’s father reported his daughter missing around midnight. The dad told police his daughter and his girlfriend’s 15-year-old son left home around 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The family said the two planned to walk to a shopping area about 1 1/2 miles from the home.

Police have been told the pair became separated as Wednesday night’s rain and lightning moved into the area. It’s unclear how the girl ended up in the open space off East 128th Avenue near Holly Street.

“They immediately roped off the area,” an eyewitness said. “Crime tape all over the place.”

Police are classifying the case as an active death investigation. Detectives are not ruling out homicide.
