LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A passenger was killed, and the driver and another passenger were hospitalized after a car accident on Sixth Avenue early Monday morning.

It happened in the eastbound lanes just before Sheridan Boulevard when the driver lost control and hit the guardrail, rolling several times, according to the Lakewood Police Department.

A driver and two passengers were in the vehicle. One passenger was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. Police identified her as 19-year-old Kayla Ann Flinchpaugh. Officials said she died as a result of significant head trauma.

The male driver was thrown from the vehicle but suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. He remains in the hospital.

Another female passenger was injured during, but Lakewood police said she was wearing her seat belt. Identities of the driver and third passenger have not been released.

Investigators believe alcohol and drugs might be a factor. They say speed was not a factor.

Sixth Avenue was closed at Wadsworth Boulevard about 3:15 a.m. and reopened about 5:30 a.m.
