MORRISON, Colo. -- Two hikers fell climbing at Red Rocks on Saturday morning leaving one dead and another seriously injured, according to West Metro Fire officials.
Dressed in full gear, firefighters with West Metro’s technical rescue team made their way through deep brush -- navigating around steep terrain.
“Where they were is over there to the right up there where that rock is sort of slanting. There is a crevice or canyon sort of thing and that’s where the person is,” said Ronda Scholting, spokesperson for the West Metro Fire Department.
With each step, rescuers inched closer to the body of a man who fell to his death hiking Red Rocks.
“There are a lot of signs that say do not climb on the rocks and it’s a closed area,” Scholting said.
The hikers were at the Yonder Mountain String Band concert the night before when they decided to hike around.
According to reports, one hiker fell 40 to 50 feet to his death, then his friend tried to help and also fell, knocking himself unconscious.
“The last thing he remembers is waking up this morning with the sunshine on his face. He managed to crawl out to where he was to the parking lot to his truck when a couple of passerby’s saw him and called 911,” Scholting said.
Found bloody and with broken ribs in the bed of the truck, the man told firefighters the area where he left his friend, unaware his friend didn’t survive the fall.
“The person that needed to be recovered was basically down, had fallen down off a rock and there wasn’t much room sort of at the bottom. So they had to manipulate with ropes to pull him out,” Scholting said.
Hours later, rescuers guide a gurney down a trail. West Metro Fire Department successfully recovered the victims body just before 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
“Unfortunate accident and something that could have been prevented,” said Scholting.
The Jefferson County Sherriff’s Department was on scene investigating the death. The Coroner was also on scene.
West Metro says the man who died was in his late 20’s. The injured man is 30-years old. Their names have not been released.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was investigating the incident.
