BOULDER, Colo. — A teenager who stabbed a woman to death in northern Colorado has been sentenced to life in prison.

The Boulder Daily Camera reports 17-year-old Aidan von Grabow pleaded guilty Friday to first-degree murder and was immediately sentenced for the Nov. 18, 2017, death of 20-year-old Makayla Grote. Von Grabow will be eligible for parole after 40 years.

Von Grabow's mother, Makayla's mother, sister and family chaplain all read impact statements in court.

“I honestly believe Makayla was about as perfect as they came," Jim Mitchell said on behalf of Makayla's dad.

“There is no forgiveness, there never will be forgiveness you took away a piece of my forever happiness," Makayla's mother Dennette Grote said.

“I am still in such disbelief that anybody could be so angry and vicious to even think of the things you did or planned to do," Dennette said.

Police believe von Grabow intended to kill Grote's younger sister, who prosecutors say was on his "death list." Grote answered the door of her Longmont apartment and that von Grabow stabbed and killed her while her sister locked herself in another room.

“He was a sweet and gentle child, yes he was, we’ve heard that from everybody, and then something broke. What that something was I can’t say, but my God it broke," Veronica Von Grabow, Aidan's mother said. “If I could put myself in her position I would, I swear, she didn’t deserve to die.

At one point, von Grabow's attorneys said he was experiencing "involuntary intoxication" at the time of the slaying because of an adverse interaction between acne medication and an antidepressant.

Von Grabow will be incarcerated in the Division of Youth Service until his 21st birthday and then he will be transferred to adult prison.
