Chaos reigns at East High School on first day of teachers strike

DENVER -- A student described a "chaotic" situation at East High School on the first day of a strike by Denver Public Schools teachers.

Student-filmed video showed several students in hallways jumping up and down and screaming, with music blasting.

Administrators and substitutes were being used, but there were several reports that not a lot of classwork was being done.

A schedule handed out to some students included a 90-minute session in the library to focus on "college & career" and another 90-minute "STEM study" after lunch.

A letter sent by the school to parents said a large number of students walked out of school about 8:30 a.m. toward picketing teachers.

The students who left were not immediately allowed back because of 'a concern about the large number of students not being supervised and in classes and in the hallways," according to the letter.
