Mountain biker who died at Snowmass ski area identified

ASPEN, Colo. — Authorities have identified the man who died over the weekend while mountain biking on an expert trail at the Snowmass ski area in central Colorado.

Pitkin County Coroner Steve Ayers says 62-year-old David Eckardt of Woody Creek was conscious and talking when another biker found him Saturday afternoon.

Ayers said Eckardt had entered full cardiac arrest from trauma when mountain patrol and medical staff arrived.

His cause of death has not been determined, but an autopsy is scheduled for later this week. Ayers says a head injury is unlikely because Eckardt was conscious when he was found.

Eckardt’s death marks the second on the mountain-biking trail in just more than a year. David Duff of Kentucky died in July 2017 after losing control of his bike.
