Lafayette man struck, killed by patrol vehicle near St. Louis

ST. PETERS, Mo. -- Authorities say a man from Colorado died after being struck by a police car in suburban St. Louis.

The Missouri Highway Patrol says 49-year-old James Kelley, of Lafayette died Wednesday night while he was trying to cross Interstate 70 near a busy shopping area in St. Peters.

The patrol is leading the investigation.

Police say the St. Charles County Police officer has been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure.

He was evaluated at the scene but not taken to a hospital. The 36-year-old officer has 12 years of experience in law enforcement.,

In a statement, the St. Charles County Police Department expressed its heartfelt sympathies to the victim.
