Snowboarder dies after hitting tree at Monarch Ski Area

CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo. -- A snowboarder was killed after hitting a tree at Monarch Ski Area, the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office said Sunday.

The man, 23-year-old Collin J. Zak, a native of Ohio, was serving in the military.

He was found unresponsive Saturday morning on the expert-rated Mirage run. The ski patrol performed CPR, but Zak was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash., the sheriff's office said.
