NEW JERSEY — Phil Murphy won the New Jersey governor’s race on Tuesday, returning the state to Democratic control after eight years under the leadership Republican Gov. Chris Christie.

It’s a big pick-up for Democrats, handing them their first victory in a statewide race since President Donald Trump took office.

Murphy defeated Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno in a state where Christie’s unpopularity — with approval ratings in the teens, making him the least-liked governor in the country — proved too much to overcome.
