GENEVA, Ill. — A SWAT team killed a jail inmate who had taken a hospital employee hostage Saturday in a Chicago suburb, the Kane County Sheriff’s Department said.

The inmate, Tywon Salters, 21, was fatally shot after negotiations broke down inside Delnor Hospital in Geneva, Ill., sheriff’s department spokesman Patrick Gengler said.

The hostage, a nurse, apparently was not injured, he said.

The inmate who was being treated at the hospital grabbed an attending officer’s weapon and took the hospital employee hostage, the sheriff’s department said.

The inmate was receiving medical treatment near the emergency room when he grabbed the attending sheriff deputy’s weapon, spokesman Patrick Gengler said.

The inmate took a hospital employee hostage in a room near the treatment area, he said.

The emergency room was closed but the rest of the hospital was functioning as normal.
