AURORA, Colo. — The son of a woman who died in a house fire in Aurora on Wednesday has also died, according to the family.

A post on the family’s GoFundMe page said Gabriel Vargas died Friday. Witnesses said he tried to save his mother, 58-year-old Janelle Vargas, from the burning house. She also died.

The fire happened around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at 12710 E. Seventh Ave. It spread to two neighboring homes.

Gabriel Vargas was taken to University Hospital for treatment, but he was not able to recover.

His father, John Vargas, appreciated the support from the community.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their concerns and their prayers at this time,” he said.

Many of those thanks were directed at neighbor Judy Bronstetter, who set up a GoFundMe account to assist the family.

“I just wanted them to feel supported and to know there are members of the community that are praying for them,” Bronstetter said.
