Fire damages 2 homes in Lakewood, forces out 5 people

LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- An older couple was rescued from a fire that damaged two homes in Lakewood overnight Sunday, neighbors said.

The fire started in a storage shed between two houses in the 1100 block of South Owens Street, according to West Metro Fire Rescue. The fire accelerated when a gas meter failed.


Neighbors said they heard an explosion around midnight. About 40 firefighters responded to the call, West Metro Fire said. No one was hurt.

Two homes have significant damage and five people were forced out, according to West Metro Fire.

There is no word on what caused the fire.
