LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- The principal of D'Evelyn Junior Senior High School was arrested Thursday for investigation of third-degree assault, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said Thursday.

The sheriff's office said the case was related to domestic violence at a residence.

The school sent a letter to parents, students and staff to assure them the arrest had nothing to do with his work at the school.

"While this matter does not relate to school operations, we will cooperate with law enforcement and have placed Mr. Edwards on administrative leave pending the outcome of our own inquiry," the letter said.

Edwards was placed on paid administrative leave during the internal investigation. He appeared in court on Thursday and is due back on Dec. 2.

D'Evelyn is considered one of the best academic schools in Colorado.

"Please be assured we will do whatever we can at D’Evelyn to help our students and staff process this information, and supports for students will be available as necessary," the letter said. "We want your students to feel supported during this time."
