LOS ANGELES — Comedian Amy Schumer was one of several celebrities who said they would leave the country if Donald Trump won the presidential election.
Just hours after Trump was declared the winner, Schumer said she was kidding about leaving, but is genuinely upset.
Schumer explained her stance in a post on Instagram on Wednesday morning.
Schumer posted a meme that purports to be a quote from Trump in People magazine in 1998: “If I were to run, I’d run as a Republican. They’re the dumbest group of voters in the country. They believe anything on Fox News. I could lie and they’d still eat it up. I bet my numbers would be terrific.”
The fact-checking website Snopes said, “We found no interview or profile on Donald Trump in 1998 (or any other time) that quoted his saying anything that even vaguely resembled the words in this meme.”
Schumer isn’t the only celebrity who threatened to leave the country.
Chelsea Handler, Cher, Barbra Streisand, Bryan Cranston and Lena Dunham also said they’d move out of the U.S.
After the election results were announced, some voiced their disappointment, but didn’t say whether they’d stay or go.
