LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- Investigators are looking into the possible drowning of an 18-month-old girl, the Lakewood Police Department said Wednesday.

Police were called to a residence in the 12000 block of West Louisiana Avenue about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday. A caller said a small child had apparently fallen into a backyard pond.

Police and paramedics from West Metro Fire Rescue found the child, who had been pulled from the pond by neighbors.

The girl was taken to a local hospital, but she was pronounced dead.

Detectives are continuing to investigate to determine what happened and how long the girl was in the water.

Police said the girl was in the care of a family member and had apparently wandered from the residence.

The Jefferson County District Attorney's Office will determine if criminal charges will be filed.
