EVANS, Colo. — Police evacuated a woman and four children Saturday when a man attempted to resist a felony warrant arrest by barricading himself in a motel room.

At around midnight Saturday, officers went to the Rodeway Inn at 3015 Eighth Ave. Police were trying to arrest David Blanco, 28, for a warrant out of Kansas accusing him of burglary and drug possession, the Evans Police Department said.

When officers arrived, they found Blanco had trapped the woman and children with him. Officers were able to negotiate with the suspect and safely removed them from the motel.

An officer fired a shot after Blanco raised a gun.  Blanco was not hit. The Weld County SWAT team responded and fired tear gas into the room.

Officers were able to arrest Blanco and took him to Northern Colorado Medical Center for minor injuries because of tear gas. He is being held at the Weld County Jail.

The officer who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave as is normal protocol in such incidents.
