McClure Pass

PITKIN COUNTY, Colo. — A 49-year-old man from Longmont was found dead near the top of McClure Pass on Monday morning, the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office said.

Matthew Barz was seen injured by a person driving on a rural road about 7 a.m. and contacted a nearby resident to call for help.

A sheriff’s deputy and an ambulance from the Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District located Barz and determined he had died. The sheriff’s office said Barz appeared to have been using the area as a short-term campsite.

The Pitkin County Coroner’s Office did not release a cause of death after it identified Barz. An autopsy and further investigation are pending.

McClure Pass is on Colorado 133 between Redstone and Marble. The highway was closed for several hours for the investigation.
