ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. -- Alex Alvear is being remembered as a kind soul by friends and loved ones.

Alvear was killed during a robbery at the Family Dollar off Pecos Street in Adams County on Thursday. Alvear was the manager of the store.

"It's just so hard to know someone so strong and independent is gone," Thomas "Joey" Cerda said.

On Friday, the store remained closed as a memorial laid outside the door with flowers and lighted candles.

"It is just so hard to see it," Cerda said.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office has charged Anthony Grayson with first-degree murder. Employees in stores nearby say Grayson stayed at the scene after the stabbing.

Alvear is asking for the public's help in raising money so Alvear can be laid to rest in Mexico. A GoFundMe page has been set up.

"We want to send him back to where his parents want him.  He wants to be laid to rest in Mexico," Cerda said.
