CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- People who listened to Donald Trump's speech during a rally in Charlotte on Thursday night might have heard something they were surprised about.

The Republican presidential candidate admitted he sometimes says the wrong things.

"Sometimes in the heat of a debate and speaking on a multitude of issues, you don't choose the right words. Or you say the wrong thing. I have done that. ... And believe it or not, I regret it," he said.

"Particularly where it may have caused personal pain. Too much is at stake for us to be consumed with these issues. But one thing I can promise you this ... I will always tell you the truth."

The crowd applauded after that.

A Pew Research poll released earlier Thursday showed Hillary Clinton with a four-point lead over Trump.
