GOLDEN, Colo. — The city of Golden has a rich history. But few pieces of its past are as sweet as the one involving Jolly Rancher candy.

The Jolly Rancher Company was created by Bill Harmsen on Washington Avenue in Golden in 1949.

“It’s something we’re really proud of in Golden,” said Shelly Bleckley, with the Golden History Center.

According to Bleckley, Jolly Rancher initially started as an ice cream shop, eventually transitioning over into hard candy.

“It was called Jolly Rancher because they were looking for something western and they wanted something friendly,” Bleckley said.
