DENVER -- Back in the day of wine and roses happy hour was just that. Free food and cheap drinks.

Today, happy hour is still on the menu, with a few changes. First, the food isn't free, and although ambience can be a draw, who's kidding who, the No. 1 draw for the best happy hour is cheap drinks.

Thrillist.com has shaken, not stirred, a list of the top 21 best happy hours in Denver. Not in any particular order, we visited three of them.

Jack the barkeep at Central Bistro and Bar in the Highlands makes up one of the bar's signature and very popular Moscow Mules. Regular price: $8, happy hour price is $5.

Smack dab in the middle of Lowry you'll find drink slinger Ian Swope of North County Restaurant lovingly crafting a signature margarita.  Normally that will cost you $7.50; happy hour it's only $5.

Last stop, the exotic Blue Sushi Sake Grill in downtown Denver. Bartender Dusty O'Connell whips up their version of the martini, called the Samuri Sake Tini.  Sells for $9, but $6 at happy hour.

It's true, happy hour has changed, but happy hour may not be about free food or cheap booze. Maybe, just maybe, it's about the company you keep.

Naaahh.
