AMHERST, N.Y. -- A suspected meth lab has been found underneath a Wal-Mart parking lot near Buffalo, N.Y.

Local and New York State Police set up a crime lab in the parking lot after officers on regular patrol found evidence of the meth lab in a large culvert that runs under the parking lot, WIVB reported.

The unsecured culvert is large enough that people could stand and make meth inside.

"We’ll talk to the proper authorities to figure out what we need to do to make sure that’s not accessible anymore," Capt. Scott Chamberlin told WIVB.

While shoppers exited Wal-Mart, they saw police bringing evidence up to the surface through a manhole.

"Spray paint can, some various chemicals, a liquid we believe is methamphetamine," Chamberlin said.

Police plan to review security cameras to determine who used the space to make drugs.
