LAKE CITY, Colo. – Of all the tales to be told in Colorado, few are as bizarre and gruesome as the story of Alfred Packer. After an unfortunate situation that took place in 1874, Packer was forever known as a cannibal.

As the story goes, Packer and five other men went searching for gold up in the mountains of Colorado, when a snowstorm kept them buried in a cabin for months.

One day, Packer went out searching for food and help, only to return to find four of the men dead and the fifth man munching away at their bodies. Packer told folks the fifth man killed the others and then came for him with a hatchet.

Packer said he shot the man and was then stuck with five bodies in the cabin with no food. You can guess what happened next.
