Suspect jumps from I-70 bridge after high-speed chase, crash

DENVER -- Eastbound Interstate 70 was closed Monday morning after a high-speed pursuit ended in a crash, the Denver Police Department said.

The crash happened on the interstate at Vasquez Boulevard and the interstate was closed at Brighton Boulevard.

Police said officers responded to a report of suspected shots fired in Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood about 4:15 a.m. Police got a description of the vehicle and found it near 22nd Street and Tremont Place.

The suspect continued driving when police attempted to pull over the vehicle. Speeds reached up to 100 mph when officers executed a PIT maneuver on I-70 and Vasquez Boulevard.

The suspect got out of the vehicle and jumped off a bridge to the road below. The suspect suffered serious injuries and was taken into custody. No officers were injured.

The interstate reopened about 6:15 a.m.
