GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. -- Arapahoe Road will be closed in both directions below Intestate 25 for 36 hours this weekend, the Colorado Department of Transportation said.

The road will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday until 9 a.m. Sunday for the demolition of the northbound I-25 bridge, relocating utilities and paving.

"Instead of spreading the pain over several weekends, (it's) get in there, get it done, get out, work fast," said Bob Wilson with CDOT. "It eliminates what weekend we are going to close the roadway again."

Doing the work in a single weekend eliminates the need for five overnight closures of Arapahoe Road.

The project will replace the I-25 bridge over Arapahoe Road and includes other improvements. The work is expected to last two years.

The eastbound Arapahoe Road on-ramp to southbound I-25 and the westbound Arapahoe Road on-ramp to northbound I-25 will remain open, as will the northbound and southbound off-ramps, with right turns only allowed.

Pedestrians will be detoured by the pedestrian bridge at the Arapahoe light rail station.
