DENVER -- With temperatures topping more than 90 degrees on Wednesday, along with a week’s worth of near 100-degree weather to follow, there are certain things to keep in mind.
The Denver Fire Department and paramedics want to remind people to be extra cautious when stepping outside, especially because it’s so easy for someone to get heat exhaustion or heatstroke.
“We have finally reached a point where we’re reaching some warm temperatures,” Denver Fire spokeswoman Melissa Taylor said.
Taylor talked about the sweltering concerns outside Coors Field as thousands of people poured out of the stadium after Wednesday’s Rockies-Yankees game.
“We don’t experience long periods of intense heat, so people do get a little caught off-guard doing their normal activities,” she said.
Denver Health’s EMTs monitor the games at Coors Field, keeping a close eye on fans as the sun beats down on them. More than anything, paramedics and fire officials stressed the importance of staying hydrated.
“Our good rule of thumb is we say 8 ounces per hour, minimum,” Taylor said.
For those drinking alcohol during the heat wave, keep this in mind.
"Try to off-set one alcoholic beverage with one nonalcoholic beverage. That allows you to stay hydrated,” Taylor said.
Taylor said it’s also important to look out for symptoms of heat exhaustion in a person. They include: profuse sweating, dark colored urine and dizziness.
Heat exhaustion can lead to heatstroke, Taylor said. Heatstroke occurs when your body temperature goes above 105 degrees.AlertMe
