MONUMENT, Colo. -- Birthdays are supposed to be filled with celebration, but for the family and friends of a 15-year-old who died in an accident on I-25 near Monument three weeks ago, Saturday served as yet another reminder of their loss and the unanswered questions that remain.
Marcos Johnson was one of the three people who died in a sudden crash on May 13th.
“Keep him in loving memory,” said Noemi Morales, a classmate and friend of Johnson. “Never forget about him.”
Morales spoke to FOX31 Denver outside a gathering in Johnson’s honor Saturday afternoon. Family members were too emotional to speak on a day in which Johnson would have celebrated his 16th birthday.
“It hurts more than anything. Words can’t express the feeling,” Morales said.
Johnson died while riding back from work with a moving company. The Chevy Trailblazer he was riding in suddenly veered off of I-25 northbound near Monument, dropping 20 feet before smashing into a culvert.
“His mom, more than anything is hurting. She loved Marcos a lot,” Morales said. “Right now we’re just trying to keep her in comfort.”
Johnson was riding in the Trailblazer with his mother's boyfriend Simon Mejia, 40. Timothy Baca, Mejia’s cousin, was driving the Trailblazer, but according to CSP, a witness indicated that the crash appeared to be caused by another driver, who brake checked the Trailblazer just before it left the road.
“It’s really, really hard because of course we all want justice for someone that we love,” Morales said.
For now, she says the families and friends of all three men simply wait, hoping another driver might finally come forward.
“You took a loved one,” Morales said. “People that loved them are hurting over here. Why? Because you decided to brake-check them going 75 miles per hour on the highway? You know, it sucks, people are taking it hard.”
Instead of celebrating his birthday today, Johnson's family and friends held a fundraiser to help his mother cover funeral expenses. If you’d like to help the families of all three men, there is a GoFundMe.com page set up in their honor.AlertMe
